Welcome to the Mauritius National Identity Card Unit
Since the 1st October 2013, the National ID Card system has been replaced by the Mauritius National Identity Scheme (MNIS), a brand-new system that uses Smart ID cards and that is more secure, more modern and more effective.
The Mauritius National ID Card is a document allowing an individual's personal identification. Once a Mauritian citizen attains the age of 18, he/she has to apply for the Mauritius National ID Card within a grace period of six months, under the provisions of the 1985 National Identity card Act. A person of Mauritian Descent or a person who has been newly naturalized, can also apply for the Smart ID Card, once they have obtained their proper documents from the Prime Minister's Office.
In view and in line of our objectives to better serve our customers, information is provided on this website, to help citizens better understand the MNIS, learn about the Smart ID card and its benefits, and keep up-to-date with the procedures for citizens to obtain the Smart ID card.
A new scheme, a new card, a new system.
