Welcome to the Mauritius
National Identity Card Unit

The first National Identity Card was issued in the Republic of Mauritius in 1986. The card was a paper laminated card with limited security features. Since the 16th September 2013, the Identity Card is smart card based and is more secure, more modern and more effective.

As from 19 February 2024, the Identity Card has new features including enhanced security features on the card such as:

  • Translucent window
  • Emboss
  • Enhanced UV with multiple colours (TrueVision)
  • VDS – Visible Digital Seals – QR Code
  • Colour Photograph

A digital wallet will also be available and will include a digital version of the Identity Card, the mobile ID. Citizens will be able to use their mobile ID as an identity proof and share data from their mobile ID. The digital wallet will also be used for online authentication and to digitally sign document. The digital wallet can be used to store other digital documents in the future e.g driving license, birth certificate etc.

Citizens can also choose to securely store their digital certificates on their National Identity Cards.  Digital certificates stored on the National Identity Card can be used by the card holder to digitally sign electronic documents and used by the card holder to authenticate the cardholder online.

It will be possible for agencies like the Passport and Immigration Office, Banks, Mauritius Post to use 2D barcode scanners or card reader to read civil data stored in the Barcode and the chip of the card. Agencies both in the private and public sector will be able to read electronically data stored in the 1D and 2D Barcode and in the chip of the card and data will not have to be keyed in.
