1. Validity of Identity Cards or digital wallet

1.1 Are previously issued national identity cards still valid?

  • Paper laminated Identity Cards (MNIC 1.0) are no longer valid since April 2017.
  • Identity Cards issued as from October 2013 (MNIC 2.0) are valid up for 20 years as from date of issue

2. Card Reading

How can we read the Identity Card of an Identity Card?

  • The barcode at the back of an Identity Card contains the National Identity Card Number and can be read using a standard barcode reader.
  • The 2D Barcode at the back of an MNIC 3.0 Identity contains civil data can be read using a 2D barcode reader using the SDK issued by the Mauritius National Identity Card Unit.
  • Civil data stored in the chip of the card can be read using the contactless card reader using the SDK issued by the Mauritius National Identity Card Unit
  • Data stored in the chip of the card can be read using the contactless card reader using the SDK issued by the Mauritius National Identity Card Unit by agencies who are registered with the Mauritius National Identity Card Unit

3.1 In what way will the mobile app be useful to me ?

The digtial wallet will offer a secure and convenient way for citizens to manage their identity on the go. Here are the key features:

5.2 What are the documents required to apply for a National Identity Card for a Foreigner who acquired Mauritian Citizenship?

The following documents are required:

  • Citizenship Letter/Certificate from Prime Minister’s Office,
  • Foreign Birth Certificate (in english or french),
  • Marriage Certificate (where applicable),
  • Proof of Address (Local and/or Overseas), (v) Passport, (vi) Official document evidencing a Divorce, Change of Name (where applicable)

5.3 What are the documents required to apply for a National Identity Card for a Mauritian Descent ?

In addition to the standard document, an applicant of Mauritian Descent should obtain a Citizenship clearance document from the Citizen section of the Prime Ministers’ Office.

5.5 For an address update, what type of document is acceptable as proof of address ?

The Proof of Address includes Central Electricity Board Bill, Central Water Authority Bill, Telephone Bill, Rent Book, any other Official Correspondence (e.g. Employer, Banks, Universities, etc)

6. Loss of National Identity Card

6.1 I lost my National Identity Card (NIC). What are the required documents for replacement of my NIC?

The following documents are required:

  • Recent Birth Certificate,
  • Recent Marriage certificate (if applicable),
  • Proof of Address (CEB/CWA/Telephone bill etc),
  • Police memo (not older than 1 week)
  • Invalid Pension card (applicable for Citizen receiving Invalid Pension)
    Official document evidencing a Divorce, Change of Name (where applicable)

7. Home Visit

7.1 How to apply for Home Visit for a bedridden/ old age person who cannot come to the MNIC Unit ?

Please call in person to submit a home visit application.

7.2 Where can I get the application form for Home Visit ?

The application form can either be collected at Mauritius National Identity Card Unit of Port Louis or downloaded on https://paps.mnis.govmu.org

7.3 What are the documents required to apply for a National Identity Card for Home Visit ?

To be eligible for such service, the concerned citizen should be a beneficiary of an Invalid Pension or an old age Person and a relative or caretaker of the concerned citizen should fill in an ”Application form for Bedridden” available at the Mauritius National Identity Card Centres.

The duly filled ”Application form for Bedridden” including a detailed Site plan should be deposited together with photocopies of the citizen’s relevant documents (see page: Documents required) at the Mauritius National Identity Card Centre, Ground floor, Emmanuel Anquetil building, Port Louis.

A dedicated Home Visit team will then be deployed for the Home Visit Registration & Issuance on a scheduled date and time.

8. Senior Citizens

8.1 I attained 60 Years. What are the procedures to obtain a new ID card with SC Logo ?

Please call in person at one Mauritius National Identity Card Unit with the following documents :

  • Existing Mauritius National Identity Card (without the SC Logo),
  • Recent Birth Certificate,
  • Recent Marriage Certificate (where applicable),
  • Proof of Address (not older than 3 months)

9. Fees

9.1 I lost my National Identity Card. What is the fee for replacement ?

The fees for a replacement card are as follows:

  • Rs 350 (first time loss),
  • Rs 700 (second time loss),
  • Rs 1000 (third time loss and onwards),
  • For citizens of age 60 and above and citizens with invalidity, no matter the number of times the card is lost, a payment fee of Rs.200 is applicable

9.2 What is the fee for replacement of a National Identity Card for reasons other than loss (e.g: married, divorce, change of information printed on card)?

A flat fee of Rs 350 is applicable.

10. Collection of Identity Card

10.1 After how many days will my ID Card be issued ?

Upon successful registration for the National Identity card, the applicant who shall come in person after seven (7) days at the same National Identity Card Centre or Centre specified for collection of the National Identity Card.

10.2 If the ID Card is not collected in due time because of any valid reason, are there any applicable fees ?

If the National Identity Card is not collected after a prolonged period, the National Identity Card unit may destroy the uncollected card.

11. What is CBN ?

Card Control Number (CCN) or Card Body Number (CBN), in relation to an identity card, means an 9-character identifier printed on the reverse of the identity card which uniquely identifies that card.
